Located on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, a significant landmark that stands as a testament to the rich historical and spiritual heritage of the city
Dormition Abbey

History: A Testament to Centuries of Faith

Built on the site traditionally believed to be where the Virgin Mary fell into eternal sleep (the “Dormition”), the Abbey’s roots trace back to the early Christian era. The current structure was completed in 1910 by the German Catholic Church, and designed by architect Heinrich Renard. The original Byzantine basilica, Hagia Sion, was constructed by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine I in the 4th century but was destroyed during the Persian invasion in 614 AD. The modern Abbey stands as a resurrection of this ancient sanctity, encapsulating centuries of faith and devotion.
